Objective
Students will be able to describe items characters carry with them in order to make inferences about those characters.  Students will be able to complete extra credit in order to increase their final grades.   


Do-Now
What similarities have you noticed between the items carried in “The Things They Carried” and “Saving Private Ryan?”  These items can be both tangible and nontangible items.


Today: 1) Finish watching "Saving Private Ryan" and complete inference charts.

2) Last Minute Extra Credit (Due by the end of class TODAY): Worth 20 Points: Write a version of "The Things They Carried" for high school students.  Explain what items students carry (both tangible and intangible) and what you can infer about students based on the items they carried.  You can choose to write about individual students, students as a whole, or both.  Your story should be a minimum of TWENTY complete sentences.

Exit SlipWhat items do you believe modern soldiers may carry with them today that soldiers in both the film and the book carried with them?  Why do you believe these items are universal for all soldiers to carry, despite the difference in time?  What do these items should you about the impact of war on a soldier’s life?

Today: Continue watching "Saving Private Ryan" and completing your inference charts.

Exit Slip: What intangible items do the soliders in "Saving Private Ryan" appear to be carrying?  How do these intangible items compare with those that the soldiers in "The Things They Carried" had?  Explain.

Thursday, January 30

Objective: Students will be able to describe items characters carry with them in order to make inferences about those characters.

Do-Now: What do you believe was the most interesting item a character from "The Things They Carried" had with him?  Why was this item so interesting to you?  What did this item show you about that character?

Today: 1) Review making inferences

2) Begin watching "Saving Private Ryan" and filling out your new inference chart.

Exit Slip: Which items do the soldiers in "Saving Private Ryan" carry with them that are similar to the items carried by soldiers in "The Things They Carried."

Homework: "The Kite Runner" Project Due TOMORROW!!!

Today: 1) Review main events in "The Things They Carried" and inferences made about the story's main characters.

2) Class will finish reading "The Things They Carried" and complete the inference chart.
