Objective: SWBAT correctly answer 80% or more of the review questions for "Night" and "The Boy in Striped Pajamas."

Do-Now: For your essay on tomorrow's test, you will be asked to describe Elie's transition from the top or Maslow's Pyramid to the bottom.  Give one example for each level of Maslow's Pyramid to prove Elie was on that level.  Examples should be from different parts of the book, starting with the first section and ending with the last.

Today: 1) Review Do-Nows and essay question for tomorrow's test.

2) Go over review questions for tomorrow's test.

3) Extra-Credit Opportunity (Due Monday, November 4): Essay on The Loss of Innocence in "Night" and "The Boy in Striped Pajamas."  Both Elie and Bruno are children at the beginning of their stories.  Both characters experience things that cause them to lose this childhood innocence. Compare/contrast Elie's loss of innocence in "Night" with Bruno's in "The Boy in Striped Pajamas," giving specific examples from each.  Your essay should be at least 20 sentences long and will be worth 20 extra credit points.

Objective: SWBAT prove Elie has moved from the level of "Love/belonging" to the level of "Safety" and is beginning to move to the level of "Physiological" on Maslow's Pyramid.

Do-Now

The rabbi’s son was willing to abandon his father in order to survive.  Do you believe Elie will ever reach this point?  Why or why not?  Would you abandon your family if your survival depended on it?  Explain why or why not.


Today: 1) Review questions from Sections 6 and 7.

2) Review the "Physiological" level of Maslow's pyramid.

3) Class will read Section 8 of "Night" and begin completing the review questions for the section.

4) Individually, begin reading Section 9 of "Night" and continue to work on the review questions.

Exit Slip: What evidence in Section 8 proves Elie is no longer on the level of "Love/belonging?"  What evidence in Section 9 proves he is on the level of "Safety?"  What evidence at the end of the book proves he is on the level of "Physiological?"

 Do-Now: FREE WRITE (Write 5-7 sentences about anything you want) OR Many of the other inmates have turned on one another or abandoned one another, but Elie refuses to leave his father.  Do you believe this is a wise choice?  Why or why not?  What would you have done if you were in Elie’s position?

Today: 1) Review Exit Slips from Thursday.

2) Review questions from Section 5.

3) Review the "Physiological" level of Maslow's Pyramid.

4) Class will read Section 6 of "Night" together and complete the review questions.  

5) Individually, begin reading Section 7 of "Night" and being completing the review questions.
