Objective: Students will be able to evaluate the resolution of “The Contender” in order to determine the book’s theme.

Do-Now: How do you predict Alfred’s last fight will go?  Why do you think he feels the need to fight one last time?  What does this show you about him?

Today: 1) Go over questions for Chapters 16 and 17 of "The Contender."

2) Class will read Chapter 18 of "The Contender" and complete the review questions for the chapter.

3) Read Chapter 19 of "The Contender" and complete the review questions for the chapter.

Exit Slip: How is Alfred’s conflict resolved?  Even though Alfred loses his last fight, how does he show he is a winner?  What do you believe may be the main theme of the book?  Explain by giving examples from the story.

Homework:  Read Chapter 20 of "The Contender" and complete the review questions for the chapter.  Test on "The Contender" on THURSDAY!!!

Objective: Students will be able to evaluate how Alfred is juxtaposed with both Jeff and James in order to determine the purpose of these juxtapositions.

Do-Now: How are Alfred and Aunt Pearl similar?  Why did Aunt Pearl give up on her dreams?  Do you believe Alfred may eventually find something that is more important to him than boxing?

Today: 1) Go over questions for Chapters 14-15 of "The Contender."

2) Class will read Chapter 16 of "The Contender" and complete the review questions.

3) Begin reading Chapter 17 of "The Contender" and complete the review questions.
