Objective: Students will be able to examine Alfred’s transformation into a contender in order to predict whether or not he will succeed.

Do-Now: 

Alfred has several different factors working against him as he begins his training to become a boxer.  Describe some of these obstacles and explain whether or not you believe Alfred will be able to overcome them.

Today: 1) Go over questions for Chapters 5-9

2) Class will read Chapter 10 and complete the review questions for the chapter.

3) Begin reading Chapter 11 and begin the review questions for the chapter.

Exit Slip: Describe Alfred’s first few weeks of training.  Based on his response to the training, do you believe Alfred is on his way to succeeding as a contender?  Explain why or why not.

Homework: Finish reading Chapter 11 and complete the review questions for the chapter.

Wednesday, November 27

Objective: Students will be able to analyze the change in Alfred’s character in order to make inferences and predictions about him.

Do-Now: FREE WRITE (Write 5-7 sentences about anything you want)

Today: 1) Review Exit Slips from Tuesday

2) Go over questions from Chapters 3 and 4

3) Class will read Chapter 5 and complete the review questions for the chapter.

4) Individually, read Chapter 6 and complete the review questions for the chapter.

Exit Slip: How is Alfred beginning to change?  What can you infer about him based on these changes?  What can you predict about his future behavior?

Homework: Read Chapters 7-9 of "The Contender" and complete the review questions for the chapters.

Tuesday, November 26

Objective: Students will be able to characterize Donatelli in order to make predictions about events in “The Contender.”

Do-Now: Characterize Alfred.  You may use your book for help.  Remember, you characterize someone based on his/her physical appearance, dialogue, actions, thoughts, and how others feel or react to him/her.

Today: 1) Go over Exit Slips from Monday

2) Go over questions from Chapter 1 and 2

3) Review characterization

4) Class will read Chapter 3 and complete review questions for the chapter

Exit Slip: Donatelli tells Alfred “It’s the climbing that makes the man.  Getting to the top is an extra reward.”  What do you believe he means by this?  Do you agree or disagree with this statement?  How does this statement apply to Alfred?  Explain.
