ObjectiveSWBAT evaluate at least one piece of evidence in Chapter #1 of “The Giver” to prove Jonas' society is a utopia and one piece of evidence to prove his society is a dystopia.

Describe a “perfect” world.  What would it look like?  What would the people look/act like?  What would a perfect world have?  What would a perfect world NOT have?

2) Anticipation Guide for "The Giver"

AGREE or DISAGREE: It is okay to lie in order to protect someone from a horrible truth, even if that truth could one day hurt him/her.

AGREE or DISAGREE: Being safe is more important than being free to do what you want.

AGREE or DISAGREE: The good of the community is more important than the good of the individual.

AGREE or DISAGREE: It is just as important for a parent to love a child as it is for the parent to raise the child well.

AGREE or DISAGREE: A person should choose a career based on his/her strongest skills, not what he/she wants to do.

3) Class will read Chapter #1 of "The Giver" and complete the review questions for the chapter.
