ObjectiveStudents will be able to evaluate evidence in order to determine which level of Maslow’s Pyramid Elie is on during each section of “Night.”

Do-NowElie felt it was important to stay with his father while they were at the concentration camp.  What level of Maslow’s pyramid do you believe he is on in this section?  What might happen to change Elie's relationship with his father and, in turn, Elie's place on the pyramid.

Today: 1) Review questions from Sections 2-3 of "Night"

2) Review Maslow's Pyramid: Love and Belonging

3) Introduce symbolism.  How has fire been used as a symbol in the book?  What other symbols have you seen?

4) Class will begin reading Section 4 of "Night" and begin the review questions for the section.  How is Elie showing evidence of moving to the next level of the pyramid?

5) Independently, continue to read Section 4 and complete the review questions for the section.

Exit Slip: What level of Maslow's Pyramid does Elie appear to be on in this section?  What evidence do you have to show he is on this level?  Is there evidence to show that he might still be on a higher level as well or might possibly be moving to the next lower level?  Explain.

Homework: Finish reading Section 4 and complete the review questions for the section.
