Objective: SWBAT examine the themes of racial and social bias in a novel and apply those themes to their own lives.

Do-Now: Complete Warm-Up for Chapters #7-10.

Today: 1) Class will read Chapters #7 and #8 together.  How does Maleeka feel about her appearance?  How do these feelings create her identity?  

2) In pairs or small groups, read Chapters #9 and #10.

3) Answer review questions for Chapters #7-10.

Exit Slip: What was Maleeka trying to accomplish with her new haircut?  How did the haircut backfire on her?  Explain.

Homework: Extension Activity: Maleeka's dad used to tell her, "you got to see yourself with your own eyes.  That's the only way you gonna know who you really are."  Using the Open Mind, write a TEN sentence reflection explaining how you see yourself and who you think you are.  You may use colors to emphasis certain words or phrases.  Worth 20 points  = 10 points for length, 10 points for self-description.
