Objective: Students
will be able to evaluate evidence in order to determine which level of Maslow’s
Pyramid Elie is on during each section of “Night.”
Do-Now: Pretend you and your family must evacuate your home due to an approaching hurricane. Your family plans on driving to safety and will only be taking one car, therefore you have to choose what you want to bring with you. Anything left behind will be destroyed in the storm. Make a list of TEN items you would bring with you. Items should include things you would need to survive. (Note: Your family members do not count as items, however, your pets do! Each pet counts as ONE item. "Food" counts as one item, even if you bring more than once piece of food. "Water" also counts as one item. The clothes you are wearing when you evacuate do not count, however, any extra clothing does. One extra outfit = one item.)
Today: 1) Exercise: What do you really need?
2) Discuss Anticipation Guide for "Night."
3) Introduction to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Read section on "Self-Actualization"
4) Class will begin reading Section 1 of "Night" and begin the review questions for the section.
Exit Slip: What evidence are we given in Section 1 of "Night" to prove Elie is on the level of Self-Actualization? Explain.
Homework: Finish reading Section 1 of "Night" and complete the review questions for the section.
